- A name's meaning comes from its kanji, so the same reading can have different meanings (Yuki: 雪 "snow", 幸 "happiness").
- Foreign names are officially written in katakana (Emma = エマ). Kanji spellings of foreign names (ateji, 当て字) are creative, not official.
